Why Most Contractor Blogs Fail (and How To Fix Yours)

Why Most Contractor Blogs Fail (and How To Fix Yours)

Last Updated on June 9, 2025 by Dan Stenabaugh

If you’re a contractor with a blog on your website, here’s a quick question:

When was the last time that blog helped you land a job?

If your answer is “I’m not sure,” you’re not alone.

A lot of contractors start blogging with the best intentions. Maybe someone on the team wrote a few posts, or a marketing agency added some “SEO content” to the site a year ago.

But then it fizzles out.

The blog goes quiet.

And nothing really changes.

Here’s the truth: Most contractor blogs don’t work because they aren’t written for your real customers.

The Biggest Mistake Contractors Make with Blogging

You’ve probably seen blog posts like this:

“Why Safety Is Important on the Job Site”

“The Difference Between GAF and Owens Corning Shingles”

“Our New Warehouse Location”

These are all technically fine, but they’re not the kind of posts that bring in leads.

Why? Because they’re not answering the questions your actual customers are asking.

They’re written for other contractors—or for Google bots.

Not for the homeowner who’s nervous about hiring someone for a $25,000 kitchen remodel.

What Homeowners Actually Want to Know

Let’s flip the script.

Imagine you’re a homeowner thinking about remodeling your bathroom or replacing your roof.

What would you search for on Google?

Probably things like:

  • “How much does a roof replacement cost in [your city]?”
  • “How long does a bathroom remodel take?”
  • “What’s the process for remodeling a kitchen?”
  • “Questions to ask before hiring a contractor”
  • “Can I live at home during construction?”

These are the questions that make or break a sale—and they’re exactly what your blog should be answering.

Blog Topics That Build Trust and Generate Leads

Here are a few examples of blog posts that speak directly to your ideal customer:

  • “How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost in [City] in 2025?”
  • “What to Expect During a Two-Week Roof Replacement”
  • “Should I Remodel Before Selling My Home?”
  • “5 Questions Every Homeowner Should Ask Before Hiring a Contractor”
  • “Case Study: How We Helped a Retired Couple Upgrade Their Home Without Stress”

These kinds of posts do three things really well:

  • Answer real questions your prospects are already Googling
  • Build trust with people who are considering hiring you
  • Pre-sell your expertise so you don’t have to explain everything on a sales call

But Who Has Time to Write All This?

If you’re like most contractors, writing blog posts is probably not high on your to-do list.

You’re busy running crews, bidding jobs, and solving problems.

And even if you had time, you’re not trying to become a copywriter.

That’s where I come in.

I Help Contractors Turn Idle Blogs Into Lead-Generating Machines

I write blog content that:

  • Speaks directly to homeowners and property owners
  • Answers the questions your best customers are already asking
  • Helps your business get found online
  • Builds trust before you ever pick up the phone
  • No fluff. No filler. Just clear, helpful content that works.
